Baseball Erupts for 19-4 Victory at Calvin in Series Opener

The Hope College baseball team opened a vital three-game series against Calvin University with an offensive explosion not seen in 72 years.

The Flying Dutchmen erupted for a 19-4 road victory in a shortened seven innings on Thursday, posting their highest-scoring game against the Knights since a 25-11 victory in 1951.

Wednesday's 15-run margin of victory was the largest in 190 games between the two rivals.

Hope also moved 1 ½ games ahead of Calvin for fourth place in the MIAA standings. The Flying Dutchmen are now 9-7 in league play and 17-16 overall. The Knights are 7-8 in MIAA play and 16-17 overall.

The series is scheduled to conclude on Friday, April 28, at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Hope's Boeve Stadium.

Hope never trailed after jumping to a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

The Flying Dutchmen sent 10 batters to the plate and received four two-out, run-scoring hits, including a double from junior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven HS) and singles from senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids), senior catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center) and freshman left fielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic).

Hope scored in every inning and capped the day with a seven-run seventh.
