Baseball Splits Doubleheader, Wins Series from Calvin

Junior first baseman Owen Krizan's one-out, walk-off single in the ninth inning lifted the Hope College baseball team to a 3-2 victory against Calvin University in Game 1 of their doubleheader on Friday at Boeve Stadium.

The Flying Dutchmen dropped Game 2, 9-7, but still won the three-game series and gained a game on their rivals in the race for the final spot in the MIAA Tournament.

On Thursday, Hope (18-7, 10-8) won the series opener, 19-4, at Calvin. The Flying Dutchmen stayed in fourth place in the league standings with one series against seventh-place Trine University remaining in the regular season.

Hope leads Calvin by 1 ½ games. The Flying Dutchmen host Trine in the series opener on Thursday, May 3, at 4 p.m. at Boeve Stadium. The Thunder then will host a doubleheader on Friday, May 4, at 1 p.m.

Calvin has one game against third-place Alma College and three games against sixth-place Albion College.

In Game 1, the Flying Dutchmen answered the Knights' tying the score at 2-2 in the top of the ninth inning.

Junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids HS) smacked a one-out triple to move the winning run within 90 feet.

After two intentional walks loaded the bases, Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) ripped a pitch to left to knock in Stuursma.

Hope grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a first-inning sacrifice fly from senior designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) and a fourth-inning RBI single by sophomore third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland).

Calvin scored in the sixth and threatened for another before senior reliever Matt Plaehn (Lansing, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) struck out Matt Raymond to strand a runner at third.

In the top of the ninth, Calvin tied the score on a Carson Warners sacrifice fly. After entering the game and yielding Gabe Bonemer's fourth hit of the game, reliever Trent Johnson struck out Patrick Gillen.

Johnson (2-2) earned the win.

In Game 2, the Flying Dutchmen surrendered two four-run innings, including one in the top of the eighth that extended Calvin's lead to 9-4.

The insurance runs proved critical as Hope rallied for three runs in its last at-bat and brought the tying run to the plate.

Cable's RBI single and a two-run double from senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) pulled the Flying Dutchmen within two runs.

Calvin reliever Nolan Coil retired shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) on a flyout to end the game.

Before the ninth, two Calvin relievers held Hope scoreless for four innings following a two-run homer from junior catcher Andrew Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit). Winning pitcher Evan Steinbacher entered in relief one batter after Pickett's blast and tossed four scoreless innings.
