Men's Lacrosse Charges Past Carthage with Second-Half Rally

The Hope College men's lacrosse team delivered a come-from-behind victory on Saturday, topping Carthage College (Wis.), 13-11, after a second-half rally.

The Flying Dutchmen overcame a five-goal deficit early in the second half in front of a Van Andel Soccer Stadium crowd of 250.

Hope (2-1 overall) won a non-league game for the second time in four days.

The Flying Dutchmen used a balanced attack with nine goalscorers to hand Carthage its first loss of the season.

Sophomore David Brace (Plymouth, Michigan / Plymouth) and sophomore Andrew Lanham (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) shared team-high honors with three goals apiece.

Seven teammates chipped in one goal apiece: freshman Liam Belote (Saline, Michigan / Saline), sophomore Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern), freshman John Foster (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central), junior Michael Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / University of Detroit Jesuit), senior Colin Stecco (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids, freshman Will Tobias (San Diego, California / St. Augustine) and sophomore Luke Wierengo (Northville, Michigan / Northville).

Carthage (2-1) grabbed a 6-2 halftime lead after outscoring the Flying Dutchmen, 4-0, during the second quarter.

The lead was pushed to 8-3 on a Colin Poitras goal with 10:09 remaining in the third quarter.

The Flying Dutchmen reeled off the six goals and took its first lead since early in the first quarter on Brace's goal 40 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Carthage struck back twice, going ahead 10-9 with 9:09 remaining. 

Hope ripped off four goals over the next 5 ½ minutes, including Stecco's go-ahead goal for an 11-10 lead with 5:36 remaining.

Bowen's goal with 2:35 left sealed the outcome.
 
Hope's next match is Wednesday, March 8, at 7 p.m. against Oberlin College (Ohio) at the University of Detroit.
