Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Alan Babbitt

Terin Maynard-Sparked No. 9 Women's Basketball Takes Down Calvin in The Rivalry

A timely Terin delivered on both ends of the court at a critical juncture for the Hope College women's basketball team in the latest round of The Rivalry.

Junior guard Terin Maynard's dogged defense and assertive offense helped the ninth-ranked Flying Dutch stave off a comeback-minded Calvin University midway through the third quarter on Saturday, earning a 67-56 victory in front of a season-high DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 2,409. It was the largest NCAA Division III basketball crowd of the season, women's or men's.

"We had a lot of people play well today," head coach Brian Morehouse said, "but nobody played better than Terin."

Playing for the first time in the new year, Hope pushed its winning streak to eight games, improving to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in MIAA play. The Flying Dutch now trail by just three games in The Rivalry, 72-69.

Hope's next game is Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. at Trine University in a first-place showdown against the Thunder (9-3, 3-0 MIAA).

The Knights, who were coming off a 61-51 victory at No. 6 Bowdoin College on Tuesday, fell to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Jenison) finished with 13 points, second only to the team-high 14 points from sophomore forward Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan/Lansing Catholic). Sophomore guard Anna Richards (DeWitt, Michigan/Lansing Catholic) chipped in 12.

Calvin used an 8-0 run to trim Hope's lead to 41-32 on an Emma Witte jumper with 3:59 remaining in the third quarter. The Knights battled despite being without two of their leading scorers: senior guard Anna Fernandez and junior forward Hannah Sall.

Maynard returned to the court after a media timeout and sank a layup in the paint. Calvin answered with a Ryann Rohrer layup, but Maynard followed with a 3-pointer and a steal with a fast-break layup before the quarter ended. The Flying Dutch headed into the final 10 minutes back in command, ahead 50-34.

Morehouse said Maynard put the Orange and Blue on her back.

"I think a lot of people look offensively at her putting us on her back because she got to the rim a couple of times and made a 3, but I thought she put us back defensively," Morehouse said. "We were leaking oil. They were coming, they had all the momentum. I thought we were flat-footed and stuck in the mud, then Taryn just got us going defensively. Her leadership was on display big-time today."

The victory was Hope's 20th in the past 21 meetings against the Knights. Calvin snapped the Flying Dutch's longest winning streak in The Rivalry (20 games) in their last meeting during the 2025 MIAA Tournament semifinals at Trine.

Rohrer led the Knights with 15 points and five rebounds. Katelyn LaRue also scored in double figures with 13 points.

Hope outscored Calvin 20-8 at the free-throw line and 38-28 in the paint.

The Flying Dutch shot 87% from the line (20 of 23), their second-highest mark in a game this season. Hope also made at least 20 free throws for the fourth time.

Leah Richards was perfect at the free-throw line, going 10 of 10 to become the second Hope player to finish a game at DeVos Fieldhouse without a miss on at least 10 attempts. Angelique Gaddy went 12 of 12 against Kalamazoo College on Jan. 15, 2013.

Senior Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan/South Christian) totaled the second-most free throws made (5 of 6) and contributed seven points. Maynard and sophomore forward Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan/Hudsonville) each made two, with Petroelje adding eight points. Junior guard Emma Yakey (St. Charles, Illinois/St. Charles East) also made a free throw.

Morehouse credited associate head coach Courtney Kust for an idea that helped spark Hope's improved free-throw shooting.

"She came to me over Christmas and said we should try to make 50 to 100 free throws over break," Morehouse said. "I think our kids walk up to the line with confidence right now. If you think about it, most of them over eight days of practice made about 400 free throws. That's a lot of free throws. They're seeing the ball go in. You get in the game and you calm down because you've done this before."
