The Hope College men's tennis team hosted Goshen College on Saturday at the VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts and fell, 6-1.
Sophomore Blake Smith (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm HS) earned Hope's lone point with a hard-fought, three-set win at No. 6 singles, edging Goshen's Joaquin Luque, 7-6 (4), 0-6, 1-0 (10-3).
At No. 1 doubles, junior Cooper Nugent (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) and junior Alec Maynard (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) fell to Filippo Gallo and Timo Novak, 7-5.
The No. 2 doubles pairing of sophomore Hank Mast (Kansas City, Missouri / Liberty) and junior Ned Curley (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) lost to Iago Cicui and Garrett Stoltzfus, 6-1.
Paulo Lopez and Luque of Goshen defeated Paul Schneider and sophomore Elliot Dozeman (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) at No. 3 doubles, 6-4.
At No. 1 singles Curley fell to Iago, 6-4, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, Schneider lost to Novak, 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 3 singles, Dozeman fell to Gallo, 6-0, 7-5.
At No. 4 singles, sophomore Karsten Patel (Birmingham, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) was defeated by Stoltzfus, 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 5 singles, Maynard fell to Lopez, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Hope's next match is in Kalamazoo, Michigan for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 26-27.
