Men's Soccer Erupts for Four Goals Late, Downs Benedictine

The Hope College men's soccer team found its scoring touch down the stretch to claim a 4-0 victory at Benedictine University (Illinois) on Saturday near Chicago.

The Flying Dutchmen struck for four goals over the final 26 ½ minutes to top their non-league foe.

Hope extended its winning streak to two matches and evened its overall record at 3-3. The Flying Dutchmen snapped a three-game losing streak by winning twice on the road this week by a combined margin of 14-0.

"I've been proud of the guys this week," head coach David Blahnik said. "We had a really tough schedule early on. They've been practicing very hard, staying committed to the process. Today was a great example of that; the training this week translated into our games. We were confident the goals would come. Obviously, they did."

At Benedictine (13-1), Hope dominated play. Still, the match remained scoreless until sophomore Jackson Mindling (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) delivered the game-winner with 26 minutes, 29 seconds remaining off an assist from junior Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph).

It was Mindling's team-leading fifth goal of the season and 14th in his career.

The Flying Dutchmen tripled Benedictine's shot production with a 27-9 edge.

Junior Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) then broke the game open by scoring twice in less than three minutes during the 69th and 72nd minutes.

Weigel, playing not far from his hometown, buried two shots in the low right corner of the goal. He now has three goals on the season, matching his career-high. He has eight career goals.

Walters closed the scoring in the 89th minute with his third goal of the season and the 21st of his career.

In goal, sophomore Daniel Morgan (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) posted a seven-save shutout.

The Flying Dutchmen next play on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. Central at the University of Chicago.
