Women's Soccer Rallies, Plays Unbeaten Illinois Tech to a 2-2 Draw

Hope's next game is Poster Day on Friday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium

The Hope College women's soccer team battled back to earn a 2-2 draw at unbeaten Illinois Institute of Technology on Wednesday in Chicago.

The Flying Dutch (2-2-1) scored the final two goals of the game after Illinois Tech (3-0-1) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first 26 minutes.

Senior Grace Fowler (Cumming, Georgia / Pinecrest Academy) started Hope's comeback by quickly answering Illinois Tech's second goal of the game from Tvesa Vathulya with 19:04 remaining in the first half.

On the kickoff, a charging Fowler received the ball while heading up the right side of the field. After making a move on a defender, Fowler launched a 16-yard shot on a tight angle that rattled into the top left corner of the goal.

The Flying Dutch, who were outshot 16-6, remained down a goal until midway through the second half.

Hope evened the score at 2-2 with 23:58 remaining after Illinois Tech failed to clear a save on a long Fowler shot.

Senior Claudia Folkert (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) pounced on the rebound near the right corner of the goal and delivered her team-leading third goal of the season.

Illinois Tech threatened to take the lead back with four shots, including one that junior goalkeeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) needed to make a save. Feenstra made four saves during the non-league game.

Hope returns to action on Friday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. against Capital University (Ohio) at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
