Lina Rea Launches Women's Soccer to a Season-Opening Victory vs. Milwaukee School of Engineering

Lina Rea was ready to kick off the 2025 Hope College women's soccer season.

The senior forward scored twice during the opening 13 minutes, 15 seconds on Friday, propelling the Flying Dutch to a 3-0, season-opening victory against the Milwaukee School of Engineering in front of a Van Andel Soccer Stadium crowd of 918.

Lea (Macomb, Michigan / Utica HS) recorded her second career multi-goal game, matching her output against visiting Alma College on Oct. 5, 2024. Another senior, Claudia Folkert (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central), scored Hope's final goal at the 32-minute mark.

"We adjusted to what they were giving us defensively exploiting it, and I thought that was huge," head coach Holly Van Noord said. "I thought our decision making was awesome. I'm really proud of putting three in the back of the net, and Lina especially, executing some of those difficult balls. Seeing what we've been working on in practice come to fruition was awesome."

The Flying Dutch dominated play, outshooting the Raiders by a 23-8 margin. Junior Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) posted the shutout with three saves. MSOE goalkeeper Page Sanchez made eight saves.

Lea's first goal came after MSOE failed to clear a cross. The exercise science major buried a straight-on shot from 25 yards out into the top right corner of the goal 9:16 after the opening kickoff.

Four minutes later, Lea cleaned up a loose ball from about 10 feet out and buried it in the back of the net. "She has that X-factor you can't coach," Van Noord said. "Her athleticism, knowledge of the game and ability to read the game is impressive. She's a smart athlete."

Hope returns to the pitch on Saturday, Aug. 30, at home against Wartburg College (Iowa). Wartburg lost at Calvin University, 2-0, on Friday.
