Men's Lacrosse Scores Program-Best 30 Goals, Secures Outright MIAA Crown

The Hope College men's lacrosse team wrapped up an MIAA title repeat in dominating fashion.

The Flying Dutchmen set a program scoring record during a 30-3 victory at Alma College, completing their second back-to-back regular-season championships and fifth unbeaten MIAA campaign since 2018.

Hope's five MIAA titles are tops among league schools.

The Flying Dutchmen (11-4, 6-0 MIAA) used 18 different goal scorers to top the program's previous best of 27 goals in 2014 against Dubuque University (Iowa).

The 30 goals are tied for the eighth-most in an NCAA Division III game this season.

Hope will be seeded first for the MIAA Tournament that begins on Saturday, April 26, and receives a first-round bye. The Orange and Blue will host a semifinal on Tuesday, April 29, at a time to be announced at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Against Alma, the Flying Dutchmen jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 8 ½ minutes and led, 17-2, at halftime after scoring all nine second-quarter goals.

Freshman Luke O'Connell (Colorado Springs, Colorado / Discovery Canyon Campus HS) contributed a game-high six points with four goals and two assists.

Three of O'Connell's teammates chipped in three goals apiece: senior Samuel Haensly (Seabrook, Texas / Clear Falls), junior Carl Bailey (Oxford, Michigan / Oxford) and freshman Weston Godbold (Lowell, Michigan / Lowell). Haensly also recorded two assists.

Three more from the Orange and Blue finished with two goals apiece: senior Nick McCreery (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford), junior Will Tobias (San Diego, California / St. Augustine) and junior Jackson Early (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing).

Sophomore Gibson Heethuis (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) totaled one goal and four assists.
