Baseball Breaks into the Win Column, Splits Doubleheader at Franklin

The Hope College baseball team broke into the win column and gave head coach Ryan Dorow his first collegiate coaching victory at Franklin College (Indiana) on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen claimed a 12-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader. Franklin rebounded in the nightcap for a 26-7 victory in seven innings and took the weekend three-game series. The Grizzlies won Friday's opener, 7-5.

In Saturday's first game, freshman centerfielder Corbin Bennetts (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison HS) led the Orange and Blue 11-hit attack by going 4-for-5 with five RBIs.

Bennetts opened the scoring by smacking a two-run single to right in the top of the second.  He knocked in another run in the fourth with a fielder's choice to start a four-run rally, then scored on a two-run single from junior baseman Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton).

Freshman designated hitter Colton Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) capped the rally by scoring on a wild pitch.

Bennetts delivered an RBI double to start a two-run fifth and a run-scoring single for Hope's final run.

Senior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland) and junior rightfielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) each collected two hits. DeMann and senior catcher Ben Stratman (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Pioneer) scored three times apiece.

Winning pitcher Mason Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) scattered five hits and two earned runs over seven innings of work, raising his record to 1-1 on the season. The righthander struck out six.

In Game 2, Hope answered a four-run Franklin first with a four-run second, but the Grizzlies erupted for a 10-run second. Franklin drew 18 walks and collected 12 hits against eight Flying Dutchmen pitchers.

Stratman's three hits topped Hope. Bennetts laced two hits, including a two-run single. Kinnie had two RBI singles.

Hope (1-7) next will play down south during its annual spring break trip. The Flying Dutchmen start a nine-game stretch on Friday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m. against Rhodes College (Tennessee) in Citrus Ridge, Florida.
