Baseball Wins a One-Run Game, Loses One at Trine in MIAA Opener

The Hope College baseball team split a pair of one-run games at Trine University on Thursday, taking Game 1, 3-2, in seven innings but losing Game 2, 6-5, in nine innings.

The MIAA-opening series is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m., with a nine-inning game at Boeve Baseball Stadium. Friday's initial scheduled meeting was rained out.

In Game 1, freshman cleanup hitter Corbin Bennetts (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison HS) knocked in the go-ahead run with an RBI single to left field.

Freshman designated hitter Colton Kinnie (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Birmingham Seaholm) scored on the two-out hit after reaching base earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice. Kinnie moved into scoring position after a two-out Trine balk.

The Thunder tied the score at 2-2 with runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Hope (6-14, 1-1 MIAA) jumped ahead, 2-0, in the fourth on back-to-back sacrifice flies from senior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland) and Kinnie.

Winning pitcher Mason Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) went the distance in the scheduled seven-inning game, yielding four hits and two walks.

Belmore, who evened his record at 3-3, struck out five.

Trine (7-12, 1-1 MIAA) took Game 2 on a walk-off, two-hit single in the final at-bat of the scheduled nine-inning game.

After Trine took a 4-1 lead with a four-run third, the Flying Dutchmen battled back, tying for a run with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Junior centerfielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) brought home Bennetts with a sixth-inning single.

Kinnie's RBI single in the seventh plated freshman shortstop Carter Perry (Grand Rapids, Michigan / West Catholic). Senior catcher Ben Stratman (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Pioneer) knocked in Money.

Trine broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth with a run. The Flying Dutchmen answered in the ninth on a two-out RBI single from Bennetts that knocked in Money.

With the bases loaded, reliever Dylan Jenkins squashed the Hope rally with a ground out, giving the Thunder the opportunity for a walk-off.
