No. 9 Women's Basketball Buries 9 3s, Takes Down Oglethorpe in Georgia

The Hope College women's basketball team buried a season-high-tying nine 3-pointers to key a 68-57 victory at Oglethorpe University on Wednesday in Atlanta.

The ninth-ranked Flying Dutch drained three 3-pointers in the opening 2 minutes, 44 seconds to grab a 9-3 lead and never trailed at the TownePlace Suites Classic.

Hope (9-1) wraps up the tournament on Thursday, Dec. 18, at noon against Pacific University of Oregon. Pacific defeated Kalamazoo College, 67-58, on Tuesday after losing to Oglethorpe, 60-49, on Monday.

Sophomore Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan/Lansing Catholic) led the Flying Dutch with a double-double of a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Richards also collected three steals and two blocked shots.

It marked the second 20-point game of the season for Richards, who made three 3-pointers, as did sophomore teammate Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan/Hudsonville).

A Richards 3-pointer sandwiched around two from Petroelje launched Hope's early decisive burst against the Stormy Petrels (6-3) of the Southern Athletic Association. The Flying Dutch went on to build a 19-7 first-quarter lead.

Petroelje finished with 16 points, while senior Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan/South Christian) chipped in 13 points.

Sophomore Anna Richards (DeWitt, Michigan/Lansing Catholic) recorded a team-best five assists and added seven points.

The Flying Dutch overcame a season-worst 20 turnovers and 53.6% free-throw shooting (15 of 28).

Oglethorpe turned the ball over 19 times and shot just 54.2% from the free-throw line (13 of 24). Anna Conza led three Stormy Petrels in double figures with 14 points.
