No. 7 Volleyball Outlasts Trine, Clinches Third Consecutive Outright MIAA Title

An emphatic fifth-set comeback capped an emotional and record-tying night for the seventh-ranked Hope College volleyball team.

The Flying Dutch denied Trine University's valiant comeback on Senior Day Friday at DeVos Fieldhouse, winning 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 15-6 to clinch the third consecutive outright MIAA regular-season championship.

With an 8-0 league record, Hope claimed a three-peat of MIAA titles for the second time in program history, matching the run from 1996-98, when current head coach Becky Schmidt was a standout student-athlete for the Flying Dutch.

"It's a really tough thing to do," Schmidt said. "With some of the new faces that we have on the team this year, to be able to maintain that kind of competitive excellence, I think, is really inspiring."

Fittingly, senior outside hitter Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) closed out the match with back-to-back kills. Hope finished by scoring eight of the final nine points.

Fox was one of seven seniors honored before the match, along with Gracie Allen, Ella Contant, Tess Herendeen, Jenna James, Lauren Lee and Kate Luurtsema.

"The growth that we've seen in them has been extraordinary," Schmidt said of her seniors. "The commitment that they've demonstrated in order to make that growth has been nothing short of inspiring. They have been committed every single day."

Fox collected 13 kills, one of four Flying Dutch to reach double figures in kills.

Sophomore middle hitter Olivia Wyma (Hartland, Wisconsin / Arrowhead) recorded a career-high 17 kills.

Luurtsema (Alto, Michigan / South Christian) and junior Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) added 11 kills apiece.

Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) posted 47 assists and six kills. The setter now has 4,952 career assists.

Junior Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian) delivered a season-high 27 digs.

Trine (10-14, 5-3 MIAA) received 14 kills from Reese Steenwyk.

"
This team has been in some of those situations in the past and has found ways to dig deep and to make plays when they really count," Schmidt said. "I was glad that we continued that trend."

Hope's next match will be in the MIAA Tournament. The Flying Dutchmen will host the semifinals and finals on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 14-15, at DeVos Fieldhouse. The six-team tournament field will be announced after regular-season play concludes on Saturday, Nov. 8.
