Tied at one set apiece and facing another opponent called the Knights, the 10th-ranked Hope College volleyball team found itself in a familiar moment on the court.
A still-evolving group of Flying Dutch applied lessons from last week's disappointing finish in the MIAA Tournament title match and earned a 3-1 victory against Southern Virginia University on Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Regional at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Hope (23-6) advanced to the regional semifinals for the sixth consecutive season. The Flying Dutch will face No. 23 Carnegie Mellon for the second time this season on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m.
The Flying Dutch will look to continue their postseason run against a Carnegie Mellon team they swept on the road on Sept. 18. The Tartans (25-8) rebounded to win the University Athletic Association Tournament championship and swept Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) in Thursday's final regional quarterfinal.

Head coach
Becky Schmidt was proud of how her team responded in a pressure-filled moment against a challenging opponent. The Flying Dutch won 25-21, 20-25, 26-24, 25-22 after losing to Calvin University in four sets last week, also following a split of the first two sets.
"Huge praise for Southern Virginia. The way they played gritty defense, they did a nice job pressing at the net. I thought they kept fighting back in every situation," Schmidt said. "I'm really excited to get through that match. I thought that was a match we got better from. I could see our team improving as the match went on.
"We said in practice the other day, 'At our most fundamental, what are we doing here? We're a bunch of learners trying to get better.' That was the approach our team played with today."
The Flying Dutch overcame a 21-17 deficit in the third set to take control of the match. Hope fought off one set point before reeling off the final three points, including a set-clinching service ace from freshman
Amelia Gagnon (Belmont, Michigan / West Catholic).
In the fourth set, Hope never trailed after jumping out to a 4-1 lead.
Senior outside hitter
Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) led a balanced Orange and Blue attack with 13 kills and also contributed nine digs and two blocks.
Junior middle blocker
Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) collected 12 kills and a .440 hitting percentage. The American Volleyball Coaches Association all-region selection added three blocks.
Sophomore middle blocker and all-region honoree
Olivia Wyma (Hartland, Wisconsin / Arrowhead) also reached double figures with 12 kills.
Junior libero
Kathryn Oates (Liberty Township, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian) led Hope in digs with 21.
Senior setter
Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) totaled a match-high 41 assists. The AVCA Region 7 Player of the Year added 11 digs and two service aces.
"It's a lot of fun," Lee said of setting her teammates. "I know every time I get a pass, I can choose anyone I want. I know if they have an open net, they're going to take the opportunity to kill the ball."
