Men's Swimming and Diving Alan Babbitt

No. 14 Men's Swim/Dive Wins Five Events, Runner-Up at West Michigan Invite

The 14th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team clocked top times in five events at the West Michigan Invite on Saturday and finished runner-up at the four-team meet hosted by Kalamazoo College.

Despite competing on only one day, the Flying Dutchmen totaled 857 points, second to John Carroll (Ohio) University's 1,115. Wabash (Indiana) College placed third with 760 points, and Kalamazoo was fourth with 358.


Junior Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Missouri / Ozark), junior Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) and sophomore Luke Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) all delivered winning swims for the Orange and Blue.


Eisenmann won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.80 seconds and the 200 free in 1:42.18. Hope posted three of the top four times in the 200 free. Sophomore Everett Cox (Sugar Land, Texas / Logos Prep) finished second in the 100 free at 47.42.


In the 200 butterfly, Suranyi touched the wall first at 1:55.00, with Cox finishing runner-up at 1:57.77.


Newcomb clocked a winning time of 58.18 in the 100 breaststroke.


The 200 medley relay team of junior Josh Bordovsky (Herndon, Virginia / South Lakes), Newcomb, Eisenmann and junior Christian Hoeksema (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) won with a time of 1:34.98.


Hope placed second in both diving events. Freshman Finn Sanders (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville) was runner-up with a score of 253.28.

Bordovsky took third in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:16.50.

In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Luke Wyrick (Glen Ellyn, Illinois / Glenbard West) finished fifth in 2:13.22.


Sophomore Tyler Houpt (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) placed fifth in the 1,650 freestyle at 17:33.23 and sixth in the 100 butterfly at 55.03.


Senior Samuel Albrecht (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) finished sixth in the 100 backstroke at 55.18, while freshman Jack Szuba (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) was sixth in the 200 backstroke at 1:58.74.


Hope's next meet is the D3 Shootout, hosted by the University of Chicago on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7-8.
