Jake Punches Safety, Cadon Balkon Field Goal Powers Nationally-Ranked Football Past No. 25 Adrian

An unflinching defense and a clutch kicker propelled the Hope College football team to a 19-17 victory at Adrian College on Saturday in a showdown between nationally ranked teams.

The Orange and Blue shut out the unbeaten Bulldogs after halftime while scoring five decisive points on a third-quarter safety by sophomore defensive lineman Jake Punches (Farwell, Michigan / Clare) and a 45-yard field goal by senior kicker Caden Balkon (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) with 10 seconds remaining.

Hope, ranked 18th in the American Football Coaches Association poll and 19th in the D3football.com rankings, improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play. Adrian, No. 25 in the D3football.com poll, now holds the same record.

The Orange and Blue's next game is Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. at Albion College.

At Adrian, the Flying Dutchmen held the Bulldogs to a season-low 217 yards of total offense and overcame an early 10-0 deficit. A fourth-down stop and a three-and-out on successive Adrian drives during the fourth quarter set up the game-winning drive.

It took a team effort, head coach Peter Stuursma said.

"I thought our defense was outstanding. I am super proud of our coaches and our players. We had different players play a lot — in meaningful roles at meaningful times. That was a huge performance. That's a 6-0 team," Stuursma said. "I thought we put our defense in some bad spots with turnovers, but our offense had an unbelievable drive at the end. That was a huge kick from Caden. It was a no-doubter."

Hope's defense delivered several critical stops after halftime. Each team had only four possessions combined during the third and fourth quarters.

Following a Koronnis Davis interception that thwarted a potential Flying Dutchmen scoring drive at the Adrian 1-yard line, Punches sacked Adrian quarterback Noah Beaudrie in the end zone for a safety on second-and-6 to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 17-16 with 8:05 remaining in the third quarter. Hope sacked Beaudrie three times during the game.

The Orange and Blue received Adrian's free kick and marched to the Bulldogs' 38-yard line before punting.

A punt from sophomore Noah Dunckel (Williamston, Michigan / Williamston) pinned Adrian at its own 2-yard line, but the Bulldogs responded with a 15-play, 89-yard drive. Hope stopped a fourth-down halfback pass with senior linebacker Colton Schreur (Wayland, Michigan / South Christian) defending Beaudrie in the end zone.

Schreur led the Flying Dutchmen with a season-high 10 tackles.

After the teams traded three-and-outs, Hope drove 65 yards in 16 plays, converting one fourth down and four third downs to set up Balkon's game-winner. The series, against the NCAA's fifth-ranked scoring defense, consumed 7 minutes, 9 seconds, leaving only the final 10 seconds.

The field goal matched Balkon's career best and erased memories of an Adrian field-goal block in the closing seconds of the first half. Balkon missed his previous four attempts at field goals of 40 yards or longer this season.

Quarterback Alex Thole (Schoolcraft, Michigan / Schoolcraft) completed 20 of 28 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Thole fired two first-half touchdowns: 48 yards to junior receiver Kaden DeHorn (Caledonia, Michigan / Caledonia) with 1:46 remaining in the first quarter and 4 yards to senior H/Y Jack Goldie (Grand Blanc, Michigan / Grand Blanc) with 10:35 remaining in the second quarter.

Adrian answered with a 2-yard touchdown run by Brueggermann with 1:51 left in the first half to take a 17-14 lead.

"The guys kept hanging in there," Stuursma said. "They never got rattled."
