No. 12 Volleyball Serves Up a School Record, Road Victory for Outright MIAA Lead

Hope delivers 17 aces in a four-match victory at Albion during a first-place showdown

The 12th-ranked Hope College volleyball team aced a big challenge on the road Friday night.

The Flying Dutch tied a school record with 17 service aces during a first-place showdown at Albion College and earned a 25-19, 24-26, 25-14, 25-19 victory.

Hope (18-5) seized sole possession of the MIAA lead with a 5-0 league record after handing the Britons their first league loss and just their third in 21 matches this season.

"Albion is a really tough team. They played tremendous, gritty defense, were all over the place," head coach Becky Schmidt said. "It was a loud and raucous gym. The focus we had at the serving line was really good. We were able to put a lot of pace on it and get the ball floating around. I'm really proud of the focus we had back there."

The Orange and Blue matched the 2013 record for a 25-point set with 17 aces, accomplished in three sets vs. Kalamazoo College.

The Flying Dutch surpassed their previous four-set best of 10 aces vs. Trine University in 2008.

Freshmen Amelia Gagnon (Belmont, Michigan / Grand Rapids West Catholic) and Kiera Morrison (Bartlett, Illinois / Wheaton Academy) spearheaded the serving with five aces apiece.

Hope also received two aces apiece from senior Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Grand Rapids West Catholic), senior Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) and sophomore Jill Collins (Northville, Michigan / Mercy), and one from sophomore Angie Butler (Novi, Michigan / Mercy).

The Orange and Blue also recorded just six service errors.

Four third-set aces and five fourth-set aces propelled the Flying Dutch past Albion after the Britons scored the final two points to take the second set.

Hope finished +13 in service aces.

At the net, junior middle blocker Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) topped the Orange and Blue with 16 kills, matching her season high.

Sophomore middle blocker Olivia Wyma (Hartland, Wisconsin / Arrowhead) chipped in 13 kills.

Morrison set career highs with five aces and 18 digs to go along with eight kills.

Hope's next match is Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 6:30 p.m. at The University of Olivet.
