Women's Soccer Erupts for Three Goals, Beats Wheaton for Season's First Victory

Hope also gave head coach Holly Van Noord her first collegiate victory

An assertive Hope College women's soccer team would not be deterred.

The Flying Dutch struck early against Wheaton College (Illinois) and never trailed while earning a 3-1 victory on Tuesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope claimed the season's first victory and gave head coach Holly Van Noord her first collegiate coaching victory. The Flying Dutch are now 1-2-1 on the season.

"It was nice to see their hard work come to fruition," Van Noord said. "We have been talking about various roles and foundations for the women's program. I think they've bought in, and their consistency in that in practice showed up for this game. We had a great overall effort."

The Flying Dutch finished with a season-high in goals.

Junior forward Ainsley Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian HS) put Hope on the board 7 minutes, 59 seconds into the game.

Harris received the ball at the top of the penalty area, shuffled the ball to her right foot and buried a shot in the low-right corner. It was the first goal of the season for Harris.

The Flying Dutch outshot Wheaton, 16-1, during the first half.

"The team agreed we have to bring our best effort from the beginning," Van Noord said. "We did that collectively, which resulted in a goal right away."

Hope extended the lead, 4 ½ minutes into the second half.

Sophomore Halle Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) delivered a perfect cross from the far corner that senior forward Carley Wagasky (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) headed into the top left corner of the goal.

It was Wagasky's first goal of the season.

Wheaton (2-3) pulled within a goal in the 67th minute after Mia Blair fed Lucie Parrish on a long run up the middle. Parrish snuck past Hope keeper Kendall Robertson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) and kicked the ball into an open net.

The Thunder rumbled briefly before the Flying Dutch quieted the comeback.

Barnard set up Hope's final goal in the 80th minute, feeding junior defender Grace Fowler (Cumming, Georgia / Pinecrest Academy) at the top of the penalty area.

The Flying Dutch outshot Wheaton 30-3 for the game. Robertson made one save. Wheaton goalie Elizabeth Netz finished with 11 saves.

Hope's next game is Saturday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m. against Illinois Tech at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
