Women's Tennis Serves Up Win in NCAA Tournament Opener

The 33rd-ranked Hope College women's tennis team cruised to a NCAA Division III Tournament first-round win over No. 37 Ohio Northern University on Thursday.

A 5-0, decisive victory in Whitewater, Wisconsin, sent the MIAA-champion Flying Dutch to a second-round matchup with the third-ranked University of Chicago on Friday, May 10, at 9 a.m. Central.

Hope (20-5) has made an appearance in the second round in seven of the last 10 years, most recently in 2022.

The victory was Hope's second over Ohio Northern this season. The Flying Dutch won at Ohio Northern, 8-1, on January 27.

The Flying Dutch used their strong doubles duos to take charge early, going up 3-0 after doubles play.

The freshman tandem of Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit HS) and Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) led the charge at No. 3 doubles, getting the first win, 8-6 over the Polar Bears.

Sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) and junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) added a second point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) delivered an 8-2 victory to close out doubles play.

Weeber pushed Hope further to overall victory with Hope's first singles play victory, with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

Coffey clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.

In the other second-round match, No. 14 Carleton College (Minn.) faces No. 13 Case Western Reserve University following the Hope-Chicago match.

Carleton defeated No. 43 Wisconsin-Whitewater in Thursday's second first-round match.
