Baseball Drops Series Opener to Calvin, Honors 11 Seniors and Two Long-Time Coaches

The Hope College baseball team dropped the series opener to Calvin University, 8-4, on Thursday at Boeve Stadium.

After the game, head coach Stu Fritz honored 11 seniors and two long-time assistant coaches: associate head coach Chad Ruby and pitching coach Rick Huisman.

The loss knocked Hope (19-17, 12-7 MIAA) out of contention for a share of the league title.

The Flying Dutchmen have clinched a postseason berth and could host an MIAA Tournament first-round game next week but need to sweep the doubleheader at Calvin on Friday, May 3, at 1 p.m. to have a chance for that.

Sophomore designated hitter Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton HS) went 3-for-4 for the Flying Dutchmen after coming within a triple of the cycle and hitting his team-leading fifth home run of the season.

Senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) and senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) collected two hits apiece.

Calvin (17-20, 8-11) snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring twice in the second, three times in the fourth and twice in the fifth.

First baseman Patrick Gillen slugged a three-run homer in the fourth for the Knights, his MIAA-leading 11th of the season.

Winning pitcher Nolan Coil (5-2) scattered nine hits and four runs over 6 ? innings.
