Softball Topped in Doubleheader at Franklin

The Hope College softball team's four-game winning streak was snapped with 6-1 and 4-3 losses at Franklin College (Ind.) during a non-league doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Flying Dutch (16-9 overall) return to action on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. with an MIAA doubleheader against Albion College at Wolters Stadium.

Franklin (15-5) homered three times during the two games, including one in each game from leadoff batter Eriana Wagner.

Senior right fielder Emily Martin (Whitehall, Michigan / Whitehall HS) and sophomore designated player Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) both went 2-for-4 in Game 2 for Hope.

Martin stole home in the fifth to cut Franklin's lead to 3-2. Wagner answered in the sixth with a solo homer.

DeMann's two-out double in the seventh knocked in Martin and pulled the Flying Dutch within a run, but Franklin pitcher Stephanni Kleber retired the final batter to finish a complete game.

Senior leftfielder Sydney Zombo (Clinton Township, Michigan / Fraser) put Hope on the board with a first-inning RBI single.

In Game 1, Franklin jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first after a Wagner leadoff homer and a Molly Wallace two-run homer two batters later.

Martin smacked a fifth-inning RBI single for the Flying Dutch.

Franklin starter Lauren Duncan limited Hope to four hits.
