Men's Lacrosse Fends off Kalamazoo on Michael Mann's Record-Setting Day

Senior Michael Mann pulled off a trifecta of records for the Hope College men's lacrosse team at home on Saturday.

Fittingly, the Flying Dutchmen needed their senior's contributions to secure an 11-6 victory against Kalamazoo College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / University of Detroit Jesuit HS) became Hope's all-time leader in points and assists while matching the Flying Dutchmen's career goals record. The attacker scored the go-ahead goal against Kalamazoo and assisted on two others during Hope's six-goal, game-ending run.

The Flying Dutchmen (10-3, 4-0 MIAA) now can clinch at least a share of the regular-season league championship and the top seed for next month's MIAA Tournament on Tuesday, April 23, at 7 p.m. at Trine University.

Mann finished with two goals and four assists against Kalamazoo (4-8, 1-4 MIAA).

The senior now stands atop Hope men's lacrosse with 109 assists and 292 points. Mann has matched Gunnar Elder '16 with 183 career goals.

Head coach Michael Schanhals said Mann's value goes well beyond what the stat sheets display.

"He's done an amazing job. I think the most important thing about Michael are things like the hockey assists, ground balls, how many times he helps us clear and, if we're a man down, how many times he soaks the penalty by running through two dudes," Schanhals said. "He does all the little things for us. He's an awesome leader."

Mann and junior midfielder Nick McCreery (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) each scored during Kalamazoo's two-minute unreleasable penalty that answered the Hornets taking their first lead of the game at 6-5.

The two goals came 58 seconds apart. Mann scored with 3:19 remaining in the third quarter for a 7-6 Hope lead.

Mann then assisted on freshman attacker Gibson Heethuis's (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) two fourth-quarter goals, including a man-down one with 1:53 remaining. Heethuis also finished with two goals and four assists.

Hope's defense also contributed. The Flying Dutchmen did not give up a goal after Mitchel VanGalder put Kalamazoo ahead 6-5 at the 8:15 mark of the third quarter.

Goalie Jack Balmforth (Livonia, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) made 13 saves for Hope. The sophomore recorded four of them during the fourth quarter.

Senior defender Michael Mileski (Inverness, Illinois / William Fremd) recorded four of the Flying Dutchmen's 14 caused turnovers.

Hope also killed 9-of-10 extra-man opportunities for Kalamazoo.
