Caden Brainard Perfect on Face-Offs, Sparks Men's Lacrosse Past Illinois Tech

X marked the spot for the Hope College men's lacrosse team.

Face-off specialist Caden Brainard won all 22 face-offs he attempted at the X against Illinois Tech on Wednesday. The junior from Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer HS) gave the Flying Dutchmen possession repeatedly and set up an offensive explosion that resulted in a 20-7 victory at home.

The 20 goals were a season-high for Hope, which completed non-league play with a 6-3 overall record.

The Flying Dutchmen — preseason favorites in the MIAA play — start league play on Saturday, April 6, at noon at Albion College.

Brainard entered Wednesday winning face-offs at a 47.9% clip this season.

In the first quarter alone, Brainard won eight face-offs that led to seven goals and an 8-2 Hope lead after 15 minutes.

Senior midfielder Sean Cunningham (South Lyon, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) opened the scoring 40 seconds into the game on the Flying Dutchmen's first possession. 

Freshman Gibson Heethuis (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) followed up four of his game-high five goals.

Junior midfielder Freddy Kopplow (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Saint Francis) and senior attacker Michael Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Jesuit) also scored during the first quarter after Brainard face-off wins.

Hope won 29-of-30 face-offs for the game.

The Flying Dutchmen dominated in shots as well, with 73 to Illinois Tech's 23.

Eleven different Hope players scored. Mann and sophomore attacker Andon Rieger (Elmhurst, Illinois / York) finished with three apiece.

Illinois Tech (2-5) received a team-best three goals from Diego Sosa.
