Softball Loses to Millikin, Hanover and Wisconsin-Eau Claire

Senior third baseman Emily Martin and sophomore infielder Kate DeMann collected six hits apiece to lead the Hope College softball team during a four-game weekend at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill.

The Flying Dutch lost four games, falling, on Friday, to Millikin 9-1 in five innings and 4-3 and, on Saturday, to Hanover College (Ind.) 9-4 and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 9-7.

Against Eau Claire, Hope (2-5) rallied to take a 5-4 lead with a four-run third fueled by a two-run single from freshman first baseman Eliana Ruhrup (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan HS) and a two-run double from freshman catcher Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion).

Eau Claire answered with its second four-running of the game. The Blugolds led 8-5 by scoring four times in the top of the fifth.

The Flying Dutch had runners at first and third in the bottom of the sixth after DeMann's RBI single but could not capitalize.

Hanover broke open the game against Hope by delivering a six-run rally in the bottom of the second. DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) smacked a two-run double in the fifth for the Flying Dutch, who were outhit 12-9.

Millikin completed a sweep by scoring two go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fourth of Game 2 of the doubleheader.

Designated hitter Kailyn Coates slugged a solo homer to even the score at 3-3. The next batter, centerfielder Lanie Chizmark, then singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, then stole home.

A two-run third put Hope ahead 3-2. Senior leftfielder Sydney Zombo (Clinton Township, Michigan / Fraser) tied the score with an RBI single and later scored after Millikin misplayed a ball hit to right by senior first baseman Jennaka Bultman (Shawnee, Kansas / Shawnee Mission).

In Game 1, Millikin broke a 1-1 tie by scoring five times in the fourth and three times in the fifth

Hope returns to action with its annual spring break trip, with the first games on Saturday, March 9, in Clermont, Fla., at 4 p.m. against Rivier University (N.H.) and 6 p.m. against Russell Sage College (N.Y.).
