Women's Tennis Serves Up 8-1 Victory vs. Augustana

The Hope College women's tennis team continued its unbeaten start to the spring season by adding Augustana College (Ill.) to its list of victories.

The Flying Dutch served up an 8-1 victory on Saturday at the DeWitt Tennis Center that was their fourth victory in as many matches this spring.

Coach Austin Hunt loved the poise he saw from his team, which improved to 4-1 overall.

"They can kind of go out and be generals of the court on their own, and that's great," Hunt said.

The doubles units — all of which are undefeated this spring — continued their dominance with yet another 3-0 sweep.

At first doubles, sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township HS) and junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) maneuvered their way to a 8-5 victory.

Senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) delivered an 8-3 second doubles triumph.

At third doubles, freshmen Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) and Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) completed the sweep with an 8-2 win.

Hope sailed smoothly through singles play with five more victories.

At first singles, Lopykinski drubbed her opponent, 6-2, 6-1, while her partner Moran finished up an equally impressive 6-1, 6-3, win at second singles to secure the team's victory on the day.

Coffey won 6-1, 6-2 at the fourth flight. Wei delivered a 6-1, 6-3 sweep at fifth singles.

Sophomore Mallory Matthews (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) cruised at sixth singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Hope's next match will be Friday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m. Central at Lake Forest College (Ill.).
