Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Alan Babbitt

Men's Soccer Blanks Wabash on the Road

The surging Hope College men's soccer team found its footing on the road this time.

The Flying Dutchmen marched to a 3-0 victory at Wabash College (Ind.) on Saturday in just their second game away from Van Andel Soccer Stadium so far this season.

Head coach David Blahnik said that Hope (6-1-2 overall) pushed its win streak to five games behind a complete effort.

"This was a really important game for us to get some confidence on the road against a tough regionally ranked opponent. It was their homecoming game, too," Blahnik said. "We really challenged our guys to learn how to win a hard game on the road. They did that. We had a great couple of practices this week and we were able to see what we worked on in the game. It was nice to see some high-quality soccer."

The Flying Dutchmen's lone loss of the season came on the road on September 9 with a 1-0 defeat at Elmhurst University (Ill.).

Against Wabash, Hope used goals from three different players to supplement another stingy defensive effort.

The shutout was the Flying Dutchmen's sixth of the season and fourth in five games.

Junior Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) recorded three saves for Hope.

Hesselbein received help on the back line from fifth-year senior Jake Lyon (Marshall, Michigan / Marshall), senior Colten Baker (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) and sophomore Cole Pauly (Mundelein, Illinois / Mundelein).

"They're working really well as a team. They're coming together as a unit," Blahnik said. "Our team defense is trying to be proactive rather than reactive, communicating and helping each other. We're transitioning to one of the better defenses in the region, if not the country."

Hope struck early against Wabash, taking a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on the fourth goal of the season from senior Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern).

In the 25th minute, junior Mario Hrvojevic (Lincolnwood, Illinois / Lincolnwood Academy) extended the Flying Dutchmen lead by netting his third goal of the season.

Hope tacked on a third goal after halftime. Jensen set up junior Thomas De Vries (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) for his fourth goal of the season in the 66th minute.

Jensen and De Vries share the team lead for goals.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is also on the road. Hope plays at DePauw University (Ind.) on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m.
