Men's Soccer Downs Olivet with Second-Half Surge

The Hope College men's soccer team made the most of some unexpected extra space on the field.

The Flying Dutchmen defeated The University of Olivet, 3-0, in non-league action on Tuesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium behind a second-half outburst. All three goals came after both teams were playing shorthanded.

Hope began a busy week with three matches in five days by improving to 2-1-2 overall.

The Flying Dutchmen overcame playing a man-down for nearly 26 minutes after Mario Hrvojevic drew a red card in the 26th minute after being whistled for fouls twice.

Seven minutes into the second half, Olivet's Christian Mendoza received his own red card for two fouls and the Comets joined Hope in having 10 players on the field.

Twenty-five seconds after Mendoza exited, senior midfielder Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern HS) buried a pass from freshman Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) at the top of the penalty box. It was Jansen's second goal of the season and the fifth of his career.

Weigel set up Jansen by delivering an assist with a sweeping right heel kick following an entry pass from senior Jake Lyon (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Marshall).

In the 66th minute, Thomas De Vries was fouled in the penalty box and buried the penalty kick into the left corner for a 2-0 Hope lead.

The Flying Dutchmen closed the scoring in the 80th minute when sophomore forward Reece Brown (Livonia, Michigan / Adlai Stevenson) recorded his first goal of the season.

Hope outshot Olivet, 21-6.

Junior goalkeeper Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) made two saves.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. against third-ranked and 2022 national champion University of Chicago at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
