Softball Drops Doubleheader at Adrian

Hope College saw its hopes for qualifying for next week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball tournament take a final blow Thursday afternoon as the Flying Dutch were swept at Adrian College, 1-0 in eight innings and 6-2.

Hope fell to 6-8 in MIAA play and 20-16-1 overall with the two losses. The Flying Dutch conclude the season with a doubleheader at Albion College on Saturday, May 6, at 1 p.m.

Adrian College finished the regular season with a 10-6 league record and a 27-13 mark overall. The Bulldogs clinched the final MIAA Tournament berth.

In the opener, Hope received a terrific pitching performance from sophomore righthander Grace Connelly of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville).

Connelly allowed just five hits, walked one and struck out five over 7 1/3 innings while not allowing an earned run, but took the loss to fall to 7-6 on the season.

Hope had several opportunities to score, but left nine runners on base. On three occasions the Flying Dutch put two runners on base in an inning but could not find a way to score.

Their best opportunity came in the sixth. Junior designated player Kyra Acker of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids) opened the inning with a single and took second when senior first baseman Lexi Potapczak of Naperville, Illinois (Benet Academy) reached on an error. Junior right fielder Sydney Zombo of Clinton Township, Michigan (Fraser) laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third with one out.

Adrian pitcher Abbi Patton recorded a strikeout and fly out to escape the jam, and the game remained scoreless.

The Bulldogs took advantage of a Hope error to start the eighth inning to score the game's only run. Brynn McKay delivered a walk-off single with the bases loaded to give Adrian the Game 1 win.

Hope outhit Adrian 7-5 in the first game, with junior shortstop Grace Henry of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) leading the way with two hits.

In Game 2, Adrian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Hope responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, snapping a 28-inning scoreless streak.

Junior center fielder Peyton Benjamin of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids) delivered a one-out single to center, scoring Henry to put the Flying Dutch on the board. Benjamin took second on the throw home.

Junior third baseman Emily Martin of Whitehall, Michigan (Whitehall) followed with a single to left to score Benjamin, cutting the Adrian lead to 3-2.

But the Flying Dutch would manage just one more hit the rest of the way, and the Bulldogs iced the win with three runs in the fifth.

Benjamin went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Hope offense.

Junior pitcher Samantha Vermeesch of Ithaca, Michigan (Ithaca) took the loss in game two, giving up all six Adrian runs to fall to 7-3 on the season.

Junior pitcher Alaina Adams of Oak Creek, Wisconsin (St. Thomas More) worked 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits.
