Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Albion

The Hope College baseball team split a doubleheader against Albion College on Friday at Boeve Stadium, winning 7-1 in Game 1 and 4-2 in Game 2.

The Flying Dutchmen (15-16 overall) remain in fourth place in the MIAA standings with an 8-7 league record.

In Game 1, Hope took the lead when Albion starting pitcher Brayden Raether dropped a two-out popup in the infield that allowed senior right fielder Kainan Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East HS) and junior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) to score.

Krizan added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to extend the Flying Dutchmen's lead to 3-1.

Hope scored four times in the sixth.

Sophomore second baseman Dylan Kleinedler (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Stevenson) smacked an RBI double and scored on a single from junior left fielder Andrew Pickett (Brebeuf Jesuit).

Pickett later came home on Bayn's sacrifice fly. Sophomore Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland) scored the Flying Dutchmen's final run in the rally on a double steal.

Winning pitcher Graham O'Gorman (Champaign, Illinois / Champaign Central) allowed only one hit and one unearned run over six innings of work.

The junior right-hander struck out seven and did not walk a batter. O'Gorman is now 6-1 on the season.

In Game 2, Albion (8-23, 5-10 MIAA) scored three times in the seventh to rally past Hope.

Left fielder Mark Lauro snapped a 2-2 tie with a one-out, two-run single. Lauro also homered in the first.

Cable tied the score at 1-1 with a solo homer in the second. It was Cable's second home run of the season.

Cable's sixth-inning sacrifice fly gave the Flying Dutchmen a 2-1 lead.

Both teams finished with 10 hits. The Flying Dutchmen left eight batters on base.

Hope returns to action on Wednesday, April 26, at 4 p.m. with a non-league game against Grace Christian University.
