Baseball Makes Most of Generous Purchase (N.Y.), Wins Florida Finale

The Flying Dutchmen score 10 times in their last at-bat for a 14-4 victory

The Hope College baseball team made the most of a generous opponent, erupting for 10 runs during its final at-bat to earn a 14-4, seven-inning victory against Purchase College (N.Y.) on Wednesday in Winter Haven, Florida.

The Flying Dutchmen closed their spring break trip on a two-game winning streak and return north with a 6-7 overall record.

Hope sent 12 batters to the plate against three pitchers in the bottom of the seventh after Purchase scored two unearned runs in the top of the innings to pull even 4-4.

The Flying Dutchmen loaded the bases when their first three runs reached base on two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids HS) got plunked for a go-ahead RBI.

Junior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) then each drew run-scoring walks.

Sophomore shortstop Logan McCoy (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) cleared the bases with a double.

After a walk, junior catcher Andrew Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit) stroked a two-run triple. One batter later, Pickett came home on a Purchase error.

Then after a single by senior designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville), sophomore third baseman Al Money strolled home on a wild pitch for Hope's second consecutive walk-off win.

Hope finished with only six hits but drew 10 walks. The Flying Dutchmen stole six bases.

Purchase had only five hits.

Winning pitcher Eli Kane (Holland, Michigan / Black River) picked up the win after two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief. The junior left-hander struck out one and walked one but did not allow a hit.

Hope's next games are Friday-Saturday, March 24-25, at Wheaton College (Ill.) Invitational. The Flying Dutchmen will play three games there, beginning with a 2 p.m. Central game on Friday against Calvin University that will not count toward the MIAA standings.

On Saturday, Hope plays at 11 a.m. Central vs. Concordia College (Minn.) and at 2 p.m. Central against Wheaton.
