Baseball Edged by 10th-Ranked Johns Hopkins

The Hope College baseball team jumped an early lead against 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins University (Md.) on Friday before dropping the spring break opener, 7-6, in Auburndale, Florida.

Johns Hopkins (11-1 overall) scored the game's final seven runs, including two in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Flying Dutchmen (3-5) aim to rebound on Saturday, March 18, at 1:30 p.m. with a doubleheader against Lawrence University (Wis.).

Against Johns Hopkins, Hope produced all of its offense during the first three innings.

Senior designated hitter Spencer Cable scored in the first when junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) reached base on a fielder's choice.

In the second, senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) singled in junior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian).

The Flying Dutchmen struck for four more runs in the third.

First, senior right fielder Kainan Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) and Cable added another run when senior catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center) reached on a fielder's choice.

Regan then scored on an RBI triple from junior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven).

Krizan capped the rally by coming home with an unearned rally when Johns Hopkins couldn't field an Meeuwsen at-bat cleanly.

Johns Hopkins chipped away at Hope's lead beginning with two runs in the third, then with three more in the sixth.

Designated hitter Matthew Cooper's go-ahead RBI single capped a two-run eighth.
