The national stature of the Hope College men's lacrosse team is growing.

The Flying Dutchmen are aiming to build on their winning tradition during the 2023 season, despite graduating a talented senior class that included a pair of MIAA MVPs.

A year ago, Hope recorded its sixth full season in a row with at least 13 wins and achieved their first No. 1 regional ranking in program history.

The Flying Dutchmen captured their third MIAA regular season title and finished with a 15-3 record following a loss in the MIAA Tournament championship to Albion College.

Coach's Outlook

"We're super excited. The core bedrock of the way we play has been laid down over the past few years. These guys have embraced it and taken it to another level this year. Our basic principles of running the field, sharing the work, and getting out there playing with our friends. It's time for us to do that against somebody else. We've been practicing all month. We're excited to get going Saturday. I think it's the toughest schedule we've ever had. It's a blessing being ranked so highly in our region last year. Teams are calling us now instead of trying to see if we can come down and play them. We've got a nice slate of home games to start our season. We'd like everybody to come out, brave the elements and holler for us." — head coach Michael Schanhals

Coaching Staff

Head coach Michael Schanhals '91 has been leading the Flying Dutchmen lacrosse program since 2005. He oversaw the transition to becoming an NCAA Division III program. Since 2013, Schanhals has guided Hope to a 99-46 overall record and two NCAA tournament appearances.

Schanhals is assisted by Chris Scheldt, Pablo Peschiera, Nick Schanhals and Bruce Elder.

2023 Roster

The Flying Dutchmen bring back 26 letterwinners, including junior attacker Michael Mann, the lone returner among last season's seven All-MIAA First Team selections. Mann scored a career-high 40 goals and topped Hope with a career-best 40 assists. Mann shared the team scoring lead with fellow attacker Jack Radzville, the MIAA's 2022 Offensive MVP in his final season.

Senior defender Tucker Martinez (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) returns for a fifth season after missing the final seven games last season due to injury. Martinez, an All-MIAA second-team honoree in 2021 and 2019, helps the Flying Dutchmen buffer the graduation of defensive standout Brayden Blackburn, the 2022 MIAA Defensive MVP as a long-stick midfielder.

Senior FOGO Max Zimmerman (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Detroit Country Day) takes off as the Flying Dutchmen's faceoff specialist after four-year standout Cole Scheffler graduated.

Zimmerman is a returning three-year letter winner along with Martinez, senior attacker/midfielder Alex Goodall (Clarkston, Michigan / Northwest), senior midfielder Nolan Jamieson (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos), senior midfielder Jack Maibuecher (Chicago, Illinois / Notre Dame Prep), and senior goalkeeper John Shea (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central).

Hope will play at Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 22. The Flying Dutchmen have 10 non-league games.
