Softball Takes Two From Chicago, Extends Win Streak To 10 Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Hope College softball team reached the 20-win mark for the fourth consecutive season on Monday with a 3-1 and 6-1 sweep of the University of Chicago at Wolters Stadium.

The Flying Dutch improved to 20-6 overall after extending their win streak to a season-high 10 games with two nonleague wins.

In Game 1, catcher Hayley Reitsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) snapped a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth by driving a two-run triple to centerfield that scored centerfielder Sammi Adams of Griffith, Indiana (Griffith) and leftfielder Noelle Jackson of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Grand Blanc).

Second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland) answered a Chicago run in the top of the fourth with her fourth home run of the season and her third in the past five games.

Mutschler now has 16 career home runs, the sixth most in Flying Dutch history.

Winning pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (East) went the distance and allowed only one unearned run and three hits.

Jones (11-2) struck out 15 for her seventh double-digit strikeout game of the season. She now has a career-high 135 strikeouts this season — the second most by a Flying Dutch player.

In Game 2, Hope scored all of its runs during its final two-bats to rally past Chicago (16-11).

The Flying Dutch scored twice in the fifth inning on Reitsma's RBI groundout and Mutschler's sacrifice fly. A four-run sixth included Jackson's RBI double and a two-run single from rightfielder Amanda Diaz of Round Lake, Illinois (Mundelein).

Winning pitcher Katie Singer of Howell, Michigan (Hartland) scattered three hits and one run over five innings. Singer (7-2) struck out five and walked one.

Freshman Tena Baar of Byron Center, Michigan (Byron Center) tossed two scoreless innings for her third save.

Hope returns to action on Tuesday, April 18 with a nonleague doubleheader at Manchester, Indiana.
