Football Sacks Kalamazoo, Reclaims Wooden Shoes Trophy

Box Score

The Wooden Shoes are back in possession of the Hope College football team.

The Flying Dutchmen reclaimed the traveling trophy from rival Kalamazoo College with a 31-6 victory on Saturday at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium.

Hope (5-3 overall) scored 31 unanswered points to snap a two-game losing streak to the Hornets and remain in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title race. The Flying Dutchmen are in second place with a 4-1 league record - one-half game behind first-place Olivet — with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Hope overcame a Kalamazoo 40-yard interception return for a touchdown 5 ½ minutes into the first quarter.

Junior running back Mike Miklusicak of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS) fueled the comeback by rushing for a game-high 166 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. He scored on runs of 6 and 14 yards in the second quarter and 55 yards in the third quarter.

It was Miklusicak's fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season and third in a row.

The Flying Dutchmen outrushed Kalamazoo 303-154.

Junior Brandan Campbell of Otsego, Michigan (Otsego) became the 11th Hope running back to eclipse 1,000 yards in a single season with his 129-yard effort on 17 attempts. He has 1,032 yards this season along with five 100-yard rushing games.

Campbell scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, while junior Darren Ford of Howell, Michigan (Howell) kicked a 20-yard field goal.

Campbell's 11 rushing touchdowns this season are tied for ninth-most in Flying Dutchmen history. He shares his spot with Mike Sturm (1984) and Ed Cain (1981).

Defensively, Hope limited an opponent to seven points or fewer for the third consecutive week.

Senior linebacker Aaron O'Meara of Wyandotte, Michigan (Theodore Roosevelt) topped the Flying Dutchmen with eight tackles, including 2 ½ tackles for loss.

Five different Hope players, including O'Meara, combined to record four sacks.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Saturday, Nov. 5 at Albion.
