Senior forward Brandon Underwood of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern HS) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Hope College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Elmhurst (Illinois) College on Friday.
The 25th-ranked Flying Dutchmen improved to 2-1 overall with the nonleague victory.
Underwood snapped a 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute when he converted a centering pass from senior midfielder Cameron Dice of Allendale, Michigan (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS).
Underwood's first goal of the season came 11 minutes, 22 seconds after Elmhurst (2-1 overall) pulled even.
Underwood helped give Hope a 1-0 lead 2:34 into the match. He had the assist on the goal by junior midfielder David Porte of Mattawan, Michigan (Mattawan HS). Porte's first goal of the season came off a 2-on-1 run.
Junior goalie Ethan Beswick of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS), made six saves for the Flying Dutchmen.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 10th-ranked Wheaton (Illinois) College. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Central time. Wheaton defeated No. 19 Calvin College 3-2 on Friday.
