Flying Dutchmen Dribble Past Adrian 82-56 For Season's 11th Win

Box Score

Guards Alex Eidson and Corey McMahon combined for 30 points to lead the Hope College men's basketball team in an 82-56 home win vs. Adrian College on Wednesday.

The Flying Dutchmen improved to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

Hope is in second place in the league standings — one-half game behind Calvin, which knocked Albion out of the MIAA lead with a 68-49 win at Albion.

Eidson posted a team-high 16 points. The sophomore from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) buried a team-best three 3-pointers, sharing the team-high with McMahon.

McMahon, a junior from Glenview, Ill. (Glenbrook South HS), chipped in 14 points off the bench. He matched his season from a Dec. 6 loss to Wheaton (Ill.).

A balanced effort in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 2,178 featured points from 13 different players, including sophomore guard Ben Gardner of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel HS), with nine points.

"It's nice for us to play a game and have a lot of people play," Hope coach Matt Neil said. "We had a lot of great things happen today. We turned it over only eight times, shot 47 percent. It was a game we should win. We came out and played like we should win."

Neil said the Flying Dutchmen did a good job of avoiding Adrian's efforts to lure them into quick shots.

"Part of their strategy is they want to get you to come down and they'll trap the ball screen and they want you to feel that you can shoot right away," Neil said. "... You get up in a hurry and you have an advantage and you feel like you have to shoot it. We just waited a little bit and threw it into the paint and waited for them to collapse. We created better shots."

Hope surpassed its top defensive effort of the season with 56 points allowed. The previous best came during an 80-58 win over Carthage (Wis.) on Dec. 7.
