The fast swimming continued for the 11th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team on Friday at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College as three swimmers captured NCAA B qualifying times.Â
Sophomore Everett Cox (Sugar Land, Texas / Logos Prep), junior Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Missouri / Ozark), and sophomore Luke Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) all posted qualifying marks in different events to become the first individuals to meet the NCAA standards this season.Â
In addition, numerous Top 10 times were achieved during the second day of the annual mid-season meet.
Cox swam a personal-best 1:38.94 in the 200 freestyle to qualify and was one of the highest finishers for Hope in the evening session, placing third in the A final. Cox, who entered the day with the Flying Dutchmen's fourth fastest time in the 200, now shares the third fastest time with Connor Halberg (2022).Â
Eisenmann also nabbed his qualifying time with a personal-best swim, clocking a 48.54 in the 100 butterfly to place third in the A final. Eisenmann became the fourth Hope swimmer to touch the wall in under 49 seconds with the third-fastest mark in school history.Â
Newcomb posted his qualifying time in the morning preliminaries with a 54.87 in the 100 breaststroke. He finished fifth in the A final with a time of 55.07.
In addition to the three qualifiers, several swimmers made their marks on the Hope record books. Others made the most of the opportunity to swim in the evening final session, with several scratches in the evening session.
In the 200 freestyle, freshman Nolan Smith (Buffalo Grove, Illinois / Buffalo Grove) entered the C final as an alternate. He dropped over two seconds from his morning swim to win the heat with a season-best 1:41.47. Senior Henry Booker (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) took second in the C final, with a season-best time of 1:41.93.Â
Sophomore Luke Wyrick (Glen Ellyn, Illinois / Glenbard West) was Hope's top finisher in the 400 individual medley, placing sixth with a personal-best time. Wyrick touched the wall in 4:01.77, marking the fourth-fastest 400 IM in school history. Junior Alex Pierce (Oswego, Illinois / Oswego) was eighth in the A final with a season-best time of 4:03.53.
In the 100 breaststroke, junior Christian Hoeksema (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) swam a personal-best time of 56.20 in the morning session to qualify for the B final. Hoeksema's mark moved him from eighth to fifth on Hope's top 10 listing. Also qualifying for the B final, junior Josh Bordovsky (Herndon, Virginia / South Lakes) swam personal-best times in the morning and evening sessions. His time of 57.12 in the evening race was the 10th-fastest in school history.Â
Freshman John Szuba (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) was Hope's top finisher in the 100 backstroke, placing sixth in the B final. Szuba's preliminary time of 51.38 during the morning marked the 10th fastest swim in school history.Â
In the 200 medley relay, Hope's team of Bordovsky, Newcomb, Eisenmann and Hoeksema placed fifth with a season-best 1:29.97.Â
After two days of competition, Hope is in 5th place among the seven teams with 576 points. During the competition, swimmers participate in preliminaries in the morning, then the top 30 swimmers from each event compete in one of three finals during the evening session. The top 28 finishers in the evening score points for their team.Â
The Total Performance Invitational concludes on Saturday, Nov. 22, with preliminary sessions beginning at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 5:30 p.m. Five individual events will be held, in addition to one relay.Â
